How to Save $$$ on Massage

Minnesota charges sales tax on massage therapy services. In Minneapolis it’s a 9.03% rate.

That adds up to a nearly $13 for a 60 minute session and $19 for a 90 minute session.

If you have a doctor’s note, you don’t have to pay that tax.

The Minnesota Department of Revenue states:

The massage is not taxable if a customer has a written referral from a licensed health professional stating the massage is for the treatment of illness, injury, or disease. A written referral must:

  • State the massage is for ongoing treatment of illness, injury, or disease

  • Be written by a licensed health care provider or licensed health care facility

That means, you need your doctor, acupuncturist or chiropractor to write a note.  I’ll need to keep a copy for my records. It doesn’t need to be fancy, and there isn’t a specific form you need to fill out. Tell them to keep it simple.
